cranium
There are 8 bones that surround your brain: one frontal bone, two parietal bones, two temporal bones, one occipital bone, one sphenoid bone and one ethmoid bone. These eight bones make up the cranium. The eight bones of the cranium form almost all the skull to protect the brain.
skull has seven bones. Normally, these bones don't complete until around age 2, giving the baby's brain time to grow. Joints called cranial structure, made tissue hold these bones together.
- The occipital bone is a trapezoid shaped bone located at the rear of the cranium that protects the brain and supports the head.
- The temporal bones are on sides of the skull, The functions of the temporal bones are protection of the brain and support of the face, specifically the temples.
- The two parietal bones are connected and make up part of the top and sides of the skull. Like the other cranial bones, their main functions include protection of the brain and support of the face.
- The sphenoid bone is behind the eye socket. This bone is a bone in front of the temporal bone and is one of several bones that form the eye socket.
- The ethmoid bone is a square shaped bone located at the top of the nose and between the two eye sockets. The main functions of the ethmoid bone are the protection of vital organs in that part, and support of the nose and orbits.
- The frontal bone is located at the front of the skull and is known as the forehead. The main functions of the frontal bone are protection of the brain and support of the face.
